Flaum Appetizing was established in the early 1900s on a pushcart, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York by Abraham Flaum and wife Lena, together with Abraham’s brother Solomon Flaum, following their earlier arrival from Poland. By the late 1930s, three Flaum Appetizing stores, specializing in herring, smoked fish and pickles, were thriving in the Williamsburg neighborhood. Two stores were located at Lee Avenue, and served the Orthodox Jewish Community, but as their fame spread, they attracted customers from the surrounding New York boroughs and Long Island. In 1987, after seven decades of service to the community, Flaum Appetizing was acquired by new management.
